Indian Railways to Convert 502 Passenger Trains into Express Trains

With most of the trains now being converted and roped in toward COVID-19 isolation coaches, Indian Railways has issued a circular to zonal railways for converting passenger trains into express trains. The major toll is increasing on long route trains which are currently acting as saviors for those stranded far away from their home amidst the pandemic situation.

In a circular issues by Indian Railways, all the passenger trains that run beyond 200 kms would be converted to express trains. The Railway Board in its circular to Zonal Railways sent a list of trains that needs to be sped up and curtail halts if required.

Earlier, the railways advised the zones to introduce ‘Zero Timetable’ from July 1 wherein trains with poor occupancy will be cancelled and scrap commercially nonviable halts. They also said even after converting passenger trains that runs more than 200 km as express trains, passengers still give less money for travel in trains compared to other modes of transport.

At present only 100 pair regular trains and 15 pair of special Rajdhani trains are being operated across the nation. These can be said to be a welcome move to ease the longer distance travel across the nation.
